Conn's Inc., which sells consumer electronics and appliances is a $1.5 billion corporation. Conn's is moving into Colorado and today's Denver Post reports that it is opening stores later this month in Aurora and Centennial. Thanks to $2.5 million in corporate welfare voted for by the Arvada city council, Conn's will also be opening in Arvada soon. Conn's HomePlus will be situated right next to another corporate welfare sponger, the Walmart-owned Sam's Club on the southeast corner of 52nd Avenue and Wadsworth By-pass.
$2.5 million in taxpayer's money to a $1.5 billion corporation. Put that with the $5.8 million being given to IRG/Walmart for the Arvada Plaza Supercenter; the $13 million the Arvada council has voted to build RTD a parking garage in Olde Town; and the $2 million Arvada Urban Renewal is giving away to a developer for the five story private apartment complex at Ralston and Wadsworth -- Arvada city government is a corporate socialist paradise for the already rich and powerful. (The list is a lot longer than the four entities highlighted here.)
Meanwhile, potholes and cracks proliferate in our residential streets ... and the city council doesn't seem to be offering you a big incentive for that new deck you'd like to build. Hmmm.
